I began climbing on my 20th Birthday. Suffice to say, I did not have the advantages of youth or of being on a team. I realized very early on that climbing was one of the things I was meant to do. I decided to pour my mind and my body into learning and training. Within three months I had sent V7 in the gym and within a year I had sent V10 outdoors. About a year after beginning my climbing journey I was offered a coaching position with a gym that had four separate locations and four separate teams, totaling over 150 climbers. During my time with that team, I coached and trained with athletes ranging from 7 years old all the way up to nationally ranked athletes and coaches. After another year of working the competition circuit, I began routesetting. At this point, I was coaching 5 days a week and routesetting 3 days a week. I also began doing more personal lessons than our gym had ever seen before. This is what lead me to prefer coaching one on one with my clients. With individual clients, I can focus on their needs and dial in the training and conversations to have maximum impact.
After my first nationals competition as a coach , I received multiple offers to move and coach out west. No sane climber would turn down those kinds of opportunities! During my drive across the country, I hired my own coach for the first time ever. I spent the next 6 months training under a professional V16 climber. Over the last 5 years, I have coached in excess of 200 climbers including brand new youth athletes, nationally ranked athletes, and adult climbers. My entire career has been driven by my desire to learn continuously, seek out new information, and research the mechanisms behind both physical adaptations and psychological phenomena. I know how to guide climbers because I have experimented, tested, and practiced everything I learn on myself... and it has been working!
